I wonder why I haven't written anything about such a useful set of programs as Google Pack before . After all, I've known about it for a long time, but I never got around to downloading the package. And I wasn't going to write about it at all.
And probably wouldn't have written further if it weren't for the news I saw the other day on cnews.ru . And the news said: " Google has started giving away StarOffice for free ".
Here I should note that the word “ free ” attracts and shopify website design pleases me as a person of a broad and generous nature , and the word “ paid ” is quite the opposite - it repels and makes me very angry. In addition, I have been looking for a long time for something to replace AbiWord - a good (and free) text editing program in general, but it has its own small glitches.
And StarOffice can be classified as... No, not a text editor. Let's take it a step further, StarOffice is a full-fledged office suite like Microsoft Office or OpenOffice.org . By the way, the free OpenOffice.org suite came out of the StarOffice source code that was "gifted" to free programmers by Sun Microsystems .
What are the advantages of StarOffice (at least compared to the same OpenOffice.org)?
StarOffice is considered a more stable office suite, and also contains a number of closed (not open-source) add-ons. It is probably these closed components - which include some fonts, templates, clip art ... that are the reason why Google chose StarOffice as its recommended office application.
It should be noted that Sun Microsystems itself is not as selfless as Google. It sells the StarOffice software package for $70 each. How Google managed to convince Sun Microsystems to give it away for free remains a mystery to me.
But the fact remains that I just went to the Russian-language Google Pack page and calmly downloaded StarOffice (along with several other programs) to my computer.
By the way, we will need to talk about these other programs (and about Google Pack itself) sometime in addition. For now, I will just note that there are more programs included in Google Pack on the English-language download page.
A little about the functionality of StarOffice (primarily for home users
Ease of use - StarOffice 8 has a simple interface that is understandable to both experienced office software users and beginners.
Database Tables - A guide to creating database tables. Over 30 standard schemas to help you stay on track when creating databases.
A complete productivity suite - StarOffice 8 provides software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings and databases.
Compatibility - StarOffice 8 software is fully compatible with Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org files.
Reports - The report explorer makes it easy for you to create professional reports.
Export to PDF - StarOffice 8 has a built-in function for converting to PDF documents.
That's all for now. I'll be working only in StarOffice for the near future. I'll let you know about the results later.
